Summary This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (N&FS) of the James J.
Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY serving as a Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) Associate, providing administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program.

SPECIALIZED
Experience:
Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position? Technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience includes performing duties in food service in a hospital environment; knowledge of tray assembly area procedures; using dietetics software programs; familiarity with regular and modified diets; assisting with food selections; following verbal and written instructions; and using computer equipment, phone system, and printers.
This position requires effective communication skills both verbally and in writing and good customer service.
OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR
Experience:
Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above the high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.
e.
, nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.
).
This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.

Combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to the meet total qualification requirements.

Duties Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Utilizes knowledge of basic and routine modified diets to identify problems in diet order information and take appropriate corrective action.
Interprets diet activity and patient information, to ensure appropriate food items on meal trays.
Verifies physician orders for unusual diets, conflicting modifications, tube feeding orders and nutritional supplements.
Assists with food selections, ensuring appropriateness of menu selections for complex diets.
Utilizes dietetic software programs to retrieve diet orders, recipes and menu and inventory data.
Utilizes a computer to enter and retrieve basic information.
Provides basic-level education and information on therapeutic diets to patients, guests and nursing staff.
Triages telephone calls from customers and/or patients.
Communicates with customers in a pleasant, friendly, personable and professional manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books and manuals.
NCC Associate functions require long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone phone and writing.
The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center.
It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment.
The employee is subject to periods continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending.
Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds and pushing loaded carts of trays and/or nourishments.
