Health Science Specialist - Cardiovascular Assessments

NOTE:
This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 9/28/2024). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Cardiovascular Assessments (25%) Collects hemodynamic data including heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, and cerebrovascular flow velocity during a resting position, cognitive testing or head-up tilt. Utilizes knowledge on how to collect all of these measures simultaneously and accurately because it ensures validity and reliability of the measures collected. Recruitment (20%) Needs to be able to understand the inclusion and exclusion criteria for each specific study. The inclusion criteria generally includes a traumatic spinal cord injury, injured for more than 1-year, American Spinal Cord Injury Association grade of A, B or C and wheelchair dependent. Data Collection (20%) Properly collects accurate and reproducible cardiovascular assessments by checking blood pressure from the Finometer machine to a manual sphygmomanometer to ensure validity and reliability. Will be responsible for analyzing and reviewing the data in a timely manner with the principal investigator to ensure outcomes are of expected quality and will maintain integrity of interpretation. Data Management (20%) Knows all processed or collected data (i.e., hemodynamic measures, blood assays, clinical tests, etc.) are maintained in designated databases for review by PI to make sure measures are being measured accurately and can be sent to PI quickly for statistical analysis. Regulatory Documents (15%) Properly stores research documents so that they are kept secure in locked cabinets and electronic data so that data is maintained within the VA firewall and is safe from unauthorized access. Experience:
Must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically related to the work of the position. Specialized experience includes understanding the inclusion and exclusion criteria of spinal cord injuries and managing the regulatory aspects and measurements of cardiovascular autonomic research studies. Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Note:

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
