Supervisory Police Officer

The incumbent supports the delivery of quality health care in a cost effective manner by the enforcement of all offenses against the criminal laws of the United States, the protection of civil rights and the preservation of a peaceful environment of all property under the control of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The incumbent works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. The incumbent may be required to work irregular or prolonged hours and may be called back within a 24 hour day. The work involves high risk and stressful conditions, with exposure to dangerous situations, emotionally disturbed patients, physically violent subjects, physical attack by armed and unarmed persons an exposure to chemical biological and/or radiological hazards. Duties are listed below but are not limited to the following:
- The incumbent enforces Federal and appropriate State and City criminal codes and VA Directive and Regulations originating in Federal Statute in the physical protection of patients, visitors and employees. -Responsible for the investigation, detention and apprehension of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the Unites States and the Rules and Regulations Governing Security, Law Enforcement, and Standards of Conduct on Veteran Affairs Property. -The Supervisory Police Officer is responsible for law and order, physical security, crime prevention, physical safety and protection of patients, visitors, employees and equipment, buildings and ground on all property owned and controlled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. -Maintains annual certification with assigned Chemical Irritant projector and in CPR- Basic Life Support. Incumbents pass an annual physical and psychological examination. -Lead a squad of police officers while actively participating in planned police operations. -Has a good working knowledge of all aspects of police work and uses this knowledge to ensure police officers properly execute their duties. -Recognizes poor or outstanding work performance, makes recommendations for reassignments/promotions and recommends disciplinary actions when required. -Stops and questions suspicious person(s) authoritatively and tactfully to determine the nature of their business and to provide appropriate direction or control. -Ensures subordinates are conducting vigorous and inquisitive patrol activities. -Familiar with the layout of Medical Center buildings and grounds to include wing and room numbering systems. -Maintain radio and/or telephonic communications with assigned Police Officers while serving as the Police Watch Commander and establishes communication checks. -Ensures that all preliminary investigations of reported crimes and acts of misconduct are investigated in a timely and thorough manner to determine whether a crime has been committed. -Secures the crime scene from contamination until the appropriate investigative unit can respond for follow up investigation. -Ensures that citations are issued in accordance with VA policy and Medical Center directives. -Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief and/or Assistant Chief of Police. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Your experience must be clearly documented on your resume. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Physical Requirements:
The incumbent must undergo and pass an annual physical for Police Officers in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 0730. Since the duties of this position are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying circumstances, the incumbent must possess emotional and mental stability. He/she is confronted daily with physical demands, such as responding to emergency situations. This includes moderate to arduous physical exertion; the ability to run, climb multiple stairs, lifting disabled or injured individuals, crawling, crouching and standing for long periods of rime. The incumbent, on a reoccurring basis is required to use his/her physical ability to restrain violent person(s) using unarmed defensive tactics. This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER POSITION:
1. Applicants must possess a current, valid State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. 2. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification. 3. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and successfully pass an 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. 4. A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. 5. A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants:
good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. 6. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
