Staff Assistant

Duties include but are not limited to:
Serves as a program liaison to the various administrative and clinical services to assist in developing information, resolve a wide variety of problems, maintain effective interrelationships, and meet program objectives. Works closely with representatives of the various administrative support programs in the management of program funds, personnel, supplies, equipment, and space. Serves as back up to the Staff Assistant to the Medical Center Director in assuring the smooth and continuous provision of services of the various functions of the Office of the Director. Responsible for the coordination of corrective actions to eliminate deficiencies, collaborates with supervisors on maintaining current policies consistent with VHA and JCAHO directives, and provides support and administrative guidance regarding administrative matters. Performs administrative work, which includes management of an office's schedule or day-to-day plans. Develops routine plans or schedules using standard references and existing information. Determines specific steps, input required, and/or milestones. Identifies schedule/time required, and estimates resources required. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Specialized Experience GS-9:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification, consideration, and resolution of issues or problems of a procedural or factual nature. Plans and carries out projects to improve the efficiency and productivity of administrative support activities. Identifies, analyzes, and makes recommendations to resolve conventional problems and situations. Ability to use qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques. Conducts interviews with supervisors and employees to obtain information about organizational missions, functions, and work procedures. Thorough conceptual understanding of the various administrative and clinical services sufficient to carry out assignments and acquire appropriate support. Knowledge of the organization and structure of the Medical Center and the various laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of the organizational units in order to conduct and coordinate administrative studies and analyses. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with a variety of personnel, both administrative and clinical, and with veterans, patients, their families, and the general public. Skill in written communication to organize ideas and present findings in a logical manner with supporting, as well as adverse criteria for specific issues, and to prepare material complicated by short deadlines and limited information. Completes reports and recommendations influence decisions by managers concerning the internal administrative operations. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or masters or equivalent graduate degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR, Combination:
Has an equivalent combination of related graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, to meet the requirements at the GS-9 level for this position. A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements meets 100%. Physical Requirements:
The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
